Kalasadan was founded by Guru Shri Mani on May 1st 1954. Its first center was in Sion where Bharatanayam and Carnatic vocal classes were started. The idea of founding this institution as visualized by Guruji is to preserve and propagate India's traditional performing arts in its divine and dignified forms and provide opportunity for the common man to learn and pursue these arts. A lot of talent came from the middle class who could not afford to learn. He founded the institution with the idea of reaching the art form to the masses where the talent lies.
To encourage the students, exams are conducted twice a year and merit certificates are awarded to them. The emphasis of these tests is on the practical aspect of the art form as children are burdened enough with theory in academics. After a certain period of training the students are prepared for their maiden performance on stage, which is the Arangetram after which advanced lessons are taken where the students get the opportunity to learn theory and also perform on stage and teach in the classes conducted.
Kalasadan's services, started by late Guru Shri Mani, are being continued by his sons- Natrajgopal (Raja) & Ranganath (Ganesh), daughters Sharada & Uma, sons in law- Ganesan & Narainswamy, grand son Sriram & grand daughter Nandini. Kalasadan has established a niche in its solo, group and dance drama presentations which have been appreciated and applauded by all.
There are thousands of students benefited by our services and hundreds of them have credited themselves admirably as performing artistes as well as competent teachers who have been spreading this art. Kalasadan has tried its best to spread its services without commercializing and diluting the essence of the art form. The charges are nominal and affordable keeping in line with the philosophy of the institute to spread the art form. Students feel they belong to a part of a well-knit family that has preserved the guru- shishya parampara.
